Traditional Nara Craft “Nara Fan” Making Experience Event! Fairfield by Marriott Nara Tenri Yamanobenomichi

On Sunday, May 31, Fairfield by Marriott Nara Tenri Yamanobenomichi will host a Nara-style fan-making workshop for staying guests. This workshop is a collaboration with “Ikeda Gankodo”, a workshop in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, that specializes in the traditional craft of “Nara Fans”.

Nara fans are traditional crafts that originated as a form of handicraft practiced by the priests of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. With more than twice as many ribs as a standard fan, they combine excellent practicality—offering a pleasant, gentle breeze—with the delicate beauty created by their translucent carvings.

In this event, led by Mr. Masashi Ikeda, the Sixth-Generation Master of Ikeda Gankodo, you can create your very own Nara-style fan by choosing your favorite combination from four colors and ten patterns. We also offer a fan-making activity using “paper collage” for children, ensuring that people of all ages can enjoy the experience.

*Please note that after the workshop, your completed fan will be taken back to Ikeda Gankodo, where it will undergo final finishing touches by the artisans. This process completes the authentic Nara fan, ready to be delivered to you.

*This workshop involves the use of a craft knife. For young children, we offer a workshop using paper collage.
